The Warsaw Ecological Economics Centre (WOEE) is a research centre founded in 1993, functioning within the Faculty of Economic Sciences (WNE) of the University of Warsaw, the Poland’s biggest university. The Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Warsaw is one of the best centres for academic research, teaching and policy advice in the country. The academic staff of the Faculty participated actively in a large number of domestic and international projects involving exchange of researchers and joint research tasks. The Faculty of Economic Sciences was both, a coordinator and a member of consortium of awarded European project contracts. The Faculty has already implemented two projects of the EEA and Norwegian Financial Mechanisms 2004-2009 and one of the PNRF.

The main goal of WOEE is to perfect and popularize economic methods and instruments to solve problems related to environmental protection. We specialise in issues concerning the natural environment and natural resources as well as the evaluation of the impact they have on social welfare. WOEE pursues its goal by:

  • conducting scientific research concerning the efficiency and efficacy of undertaking actions for environmental protection and rational utilization of natural resources;
  • participating actively in actions aimed at implementation and practical use of the results of our scientific research and expert’s reports in the field of environmental economics;
  • presenting ways to solve conflicts between various interest groups in the context of utilising environmental goods that would meet the conditions of economic efficiency and social justice;
  • popularising the use of economic instruments in the context of rational utilisation of natural resources in order to maximise social welfare – the organisation of courses and training sessions, and the engagement in the public debate;
  • educational activities aimed mostly at the students of the University of Warsaw, aimed at the transfer of the most up-to-date knowledge about environmental economics and information on its practical applicability.

The Institute of Transport Economics (TØI) is a national research centre located in Oslo, Norway, established in 1958 and it became an independent non-profit research foundation in 1986. TØI is now a partner of the Oslo Centre for Interdisciplinary Environmental and Social Research (CIENS), a strategic collaboration between independent research institutes and the University of Oslo. TØI receives an annual base funding from the Research Council of Norway, but the majority of TØI projects are commissioned. Major clients are the Norwegian Ministry of Transport and Communications, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the Research Council of Norway, and the European Commission. TØI’s annual turnover is in the order of € 10 million. TØI’s main mission is to develop and disseminate transportation-related knowledge with scientific quality and practical application, for the authorities, the transport industry and the public at large. A multidisciplinary research body, with a 70-strong research staff consisting of economists, engineers, sociologists, geographers, psychologists, and political scientists, TØI specialises in the societal aspects of transport, including environmental impacts.
